About VP5X
VP5X was issued to David Kopacz,
KY1V, by the authority of the Turks & Caicos government for the
purpose of contesting from the Turks & Caicos Islands.
"In February 2003, my wonderful wife
purchased a DX Holiday to VP5 for my 42 birthday. It was a week long
trip for rest and relaxation at the La Villa Rose in Whitby on North
Caicos Island. The house is owned by Bud Foster, K4ISV, and rented
on a weekly basis for both leisure operating and contests. It
includes two operating stations and antennas for all bands.
During my stay at VP5, I experienced
a dream come true...being on the other end of the pileup with stations worldwide
calling me. It
was truly amazing, completely exhilarating and incredibly addicting.
I knew this would be my first of many trips.
After my brief stay on North Caicos,
I decided that I wanted to go back, but this time for a major
contest. I knew it would be quite an undertaking to put together a
team for the CQWW CW contest so I began planning the event with the
help of my wife. During our conversations, I told her how much I had
dreamed of going on an expedition when I was a young ham. That is
when we conceived the idea of sponsoring a young ham for the CQWW CW
contest in 2003.
The event was such a success that we
are once again sponsoring a young hams dream come true for one of
the CQWW contests in 2004."

The La Villa Rose is located on the
north point of North Caicos Island in the small village of Whitby.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are located about 500 miles southeast
of Miami, east of Cuba, south of the Bahamas and north of the
Dominican Republic.
It is the perfect location for
operating contests, especially to North America. The tower is only a
few meters from the beach and has a perfect take off over the salt
water from the west towards the pacific, through northwest by north
to the United States, Europe to the northeast and Africa to the
east. The radio signals are
loud from all directions and it is very easy to work anywhere in the
world under conditions that would be unfavorable from any other
location. |
